What you should know about NSFAS

NSFAS stands for the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS). This fund is a government initiative that provides support to students from poor and working-class families who would otherwise not be able to afford to study. Annually, thousands of students are assisted to realize their dream to become greater than they are and obtain a qualification. And what better place to get it than at the NWU.

But what does NSFAS cover?

The bursary is a full-cost bursary that covers all essential support you would require in obtaining your undergraduate degree. This includes registration fees, tuition fees, accommodation, or transport, living and learning allowances as stipulated by the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET). Overall, the aim is to ensure that you get the most out of your studies and student life.

Who qualifies for NSFAS?

You qualify for a NSFAS bursary if you are a South African citizen who plans to study in 2024 or you are already studying at a public university and you meet the following requirements:

  • South African citizens or permanent residents
  • SASSA grant recipients
  • Applicants whose combined gross household income is not more than R350 000 per year
  • Persons with disabilities whose combined gross household income is not more than R600 000 per year.
  • Must have email account and cell phone number.

What are the required document?

  • Copy of student ID / Birth certificate
  • Copy of parent/s or guardian/ spouse ID
  • Smart card: both sides of card required
  • Proof of income (where applicable)
  • Persons living with disability (Disability Annexure A form)
  • An applicant who is recognised as a vulnerable child by the Department of Social Development must provide a completed and Vulnerable Child Declaration form completed by a social worker
  • An applicant who has indicated that s/he has no family member details and or abridged birth certificate must complete the Declaration: Non-SASSA

Based on the application type, the system will generate a list of required documents for upload. We do not accept any affidavits or driver’s license as proof of ID.
