Sometimes your final matric results are not exactly what you were hoping for, and you missed the mark by just a few… well… marks. This doesn’t mean the end (though it may feel like it at the time), but rather just a bump in the road to studying with the NWU, and maybe you need to look into a Preparatory Programme (UnivPrep).
What is UnivPrep?
UnivPrep is a unique opportunity for prospective students who don’t meet the minimum admission requirements to a formal degree at the NWU. It is a 1 year programme (in English only) that includes academic modules and academic development modules offered in the Unit for Open Distance and the NWU.
UnivPrep is available for the following programmes:
- Bachelor of Commerce (BCom) Degree
- Bachelor of Theology (BTh) Degree
- Bachelor of Arts (BA) Degree in Public Governance (with Policing Practice)
Who qualifies?
- You need a National Senior Certificate (NSC) with university admission to Diploma- or Bachelor’s degree,
- Admission Points Score (APS) of 20,
- For BCom you need a minimum (Grade 12):
- Mathematics 30%
- Technical Mathematics 35%
- Mathematical literacy 65%
- For BA in Public Governance you need a minimum (Grade 12):
- English 50%
How does UnivPrep work?
- You need to pass ALL MODULES with a minimum of 50%
- Then you can APPLY for recognition of prior learning and admission for the full-time study of your chosen degree.
- Take note: admission is not guaranteed, but is based of faculty discretion
How do I attend classes?
UODL works by means of interactive whiteboards at selected learning support centres, but you can also learn from home if you have a PC and internet access.
Sessions are broadcast live, so you can ask lecturers questions in real-time or provide answers to questions a lecturer may ask. But remember, you are going to be expected to do independent self-study to make sure you are 100% prepared for your contact sessions.
How much does it cost?
- Total fee for 2021 is R13 600 (including registration and study material)
- Successful applicants must pay a non-refundable registration fee of R5 700
- Take note: UnivPrep students don’t qualify for NSFAS funding
How do I apply?
- Download and complete the application. Only applications submitted electronically will be processed.
- Email the application form and all docs to: 12954705@nwu.ac.za
- Remember to include the following docs:
- Certified copy of ID
- Certified copy of Matric Certificate (NSC)
- Certifies copies of other qualifications (if applicable)
- Certified copy of study permit (if not SA citizen)
- GOOD NEWS: There is no application fee!
