Graduation is a milestone that signifies the culmination of years of hard work, dedication, and personal development. Paula Maseko, a recent graduate from the North-West University (NWU), serves as an inspirational figure who defied the odds and transformed her academic experience into a stepping stone for success. Paula’s story stands as a testament to the resilience and determination present in every graduate.
Paula is a bright and ambitious young woman who recently earned her Master’s degree in Chemistry from NWU’s Mahikeng campus. Throughout her academic journey, she distinguished herself not only through exceptional grades, but also through her entrepreneurial roles in various organisations and her active involvement in incentive initiatives. Her remarkable work earned her first place at the AFInMic symposium, where she presented her research. Additionally, Paula occasionally conducts cosmetic training for women in disadvantaged areas and is currently part of the Mahikeng Digital Innovation Hub, where she is inventing a comb that utilises hydraulics to aid in detangling type 4C hair.
Like many graduates, Paula encountered her fair share of challenges along the way. Balancing a demanding course load, extracurricular commitments, and nurturing her personal life proved to be an arduous task. Nevertheless, her journey at NWU was extraordinary, and she hopes that everyone gets to experience such a transformative environment. Paula was raised by an amazing woman who struggled to support her during her first year. However, the financial aid office at North-West University became her knight in shining armor, providing her with information on how to obtain a bursary and guiding her through the application process. With the necessary funding, she was able to pursue her lifelong dream of becoming a distinguished scientist.

Paula’s perseverance bore fruit as she achieved remarkable milestones throughout her academic journey. The programme she enrolled in played a vital role in her current position. Through the acquired skills, she established a hair care range called Buhler Bomqhele. She is now a PhD candidate researching cancer delivery methods, thanks to the stepping stones provided by North-West University.
Drawing from her experiences, Paula imparts invaluable advice to new graduates embarking on their own journeys. She emphasizes the significance of building a strong professional network, seeking mentorship, and remaining adaptable in an ever-evolving job market. Paula encourages graduates to seize internships, volunteer opportunities, and continuous learning to enhance their skill sets and broaden their horizons. Furthermore, she urges graduates to maintain a positive mindset and view challenges as opportunities for growth and learning.
Paula’s story epitomizes the power of resilience, determination, and a strong work ethic in achieving post-graduation success. Her unwavering commitment to personal and professional growth, combined with her passion for making a difference, distinguishes her as an inspiring role model for graduates everywhere. As new graduates embark on their own journeys, let Paula’s story serve as a beacon of hope and motivation, reminding us all that with dedication and perseverance, we can transform our dreams into reality.
